G’DAY Y’ALL (yes angus i did just indeed say gday yall)

today i am going to do more than write “msafdjlksasdf” or “word” to caption a post (promo post!! i know, i hardly believe it either)

if you follow me on twitter (or here) you might notice that sometimes i’d go on a little jaunt to toronto to chill with my friends while they put on a webcast called ‘sheer sounds.’ now that i’m in montreal i can’t as easily participate BUT it’s been really nice to get to watch and listen every thursday night (9pm EST).

essentially the idea behind it is/was that in canada we’re always tuning in to boiler room in the middle of the afternoon (i admit to having missed class to watch that stream), and now we have percussionlab not too far away in NYC (with a boss ass crew making it all happen on mondays). but what is there in toronto? NOTHING. nooooothing. i mean, a few bar nights with great music - futura, galapagos, and happy endings come immediately to mind - but that’s only great if you’re in toronto and can go. there’s nothing with that kind of interactive, far-reaching community thang that comes with a stream. so.. they’ve been working on getting this going, slowly but surely.

big credit has to be given to ian schober, who has been pushing it to grow to where it is now (still a baby, but it exists and is picking up motion, which is huge). with his guidance, sheer sounds has been focussing on bringing together more of the understated toronto/montreal bass scene with the inclusion of sibian & faun (+ solo acts here & here), kevin mcphee, chris scott, and introducing ian’s own production with the track ‘ink’ included in the mix below.

last week they had their first ‘guest’ set from toronto’s alex brooks (aka the world’s nicest dude), it was really fun and really quite good. it doesn’t really get much better than a bunch of friends doing what they love to do, which is i guess why i’m trying to share this with you now ‘cause i care and stuff. (plus next time i hope some of you might join me in the chat room, which i just figured out how to use. now i pretend it’s boiler room by going “ID???? ID? ID/????” but it’s not as fun when you’re by yourself y’know)

sooOoOOoOooO that’s it from me - here is a stacked, first-ever mix from sheer sounds, SM01

genericpeople:

Describe your sound.

I like to think I’m going in two directions - Future Garage with Hip hop influences, and ambient Detroit House.

How long have you been making music for?

I’ve had an interest in music for a long time. I played piano when I was young, and guitar in my mid-teens. I only consciously took an interest in electronic music in about ‘06, although I think the love for the genre was always there. My mother would play a lot of African tribal drumming when I was young, and I got into artists like Björk and Lustmord from a relatively early age.

I would say I first started writing music when I was about 15, starting with basic stuff like guitar loops and mouth percussion samples. If you’re a bit of a keyboard cowboy you could probably find a lot of the more obscure stuff I started out with online. With regards to my current sound, I would say I only started seriously considering pushing myself about a year ago.

Australia has quite a big instrumental Hip hop/Glitch scene. What
made you move more towards a future Garage sound and beyond?

It probably begun with a lot of the records I was listening to in ‘06 - ‘07, starting with Autechre, AFX and Boards of Canada, which really started my love for that genre, and then Burial, which was the true catalyst. I’d never really heard anything like it before. In saying that I feel a little naive, as at that stage Garage and Two-step were mainstream in England and had been on the radio for a while.

After that it snowballed, with Zomby’s self titled album, Mount Kimbie’s Maybe’s EP and James Blake’s Air and Lack Thereof, in 2009. Obviously these are only some names and there’s a massive list of stuff that influences me, but artists like that really pushed me to make music.

Who are some producers you’ve been digging lately?

Really digging the new Clams Casino EP and Araabmuzik’s Electronic Dream LP, along with some stuff released within the last few years. Actress, Kassem Mosse, FaltyDL and Flying Lotus are all good. Also, Christian Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Ryuchi Sakamoto and Susumu Yokota… those guys are always on my playlist.

Have you got any upcoming releases or collaborations planned?

Yes, I’m releasing an [all-originals] EP later this month. Also, keep your eyes out for a remix of the brilliantly talented Sydney artist, Guerre. Beyond that, you’ll just have to keep a look out!
